Established by The American Society of Dermatopathology in 1983 in honor of the Founding Members of the Society, this endowed award is conceived to recognize individuals who have made outstanding original and significant contributions to the field of dermatopathology.
2007 Founders' Award
The 2007 award was presented to Wilma Fowler Bergfeld, M.D., in recognition of her leadership
in advancing the role of women in the field of dermatopathology. Dr. Bergfeld has served
as a role model for countless women on both a national and international level. She served as
the first woman president of the American Academy of Dermatology in 1992 and received the
Walter Nickel Award for Exellence in Teaching of Dermatopathology from the ASDP in 2000.
Her untiring advocacy and leadership of women inspired the creation of the Women's Dermatologic Society Wilma F. Bergfeld Leadership Award in 2000, of which she was the first recipient. Dr. Bergfeld has authored over 500 publications in the fields of dermatology and dermatopathology with a particular interest in hair and scalp disorders. She has taught numerous dermatology and pathology residents as well as dermatopathology fellows and has a deep desire to further the careers of all of her students but particularly serves as a role model for women trainees and colleagues.
According to Dr. Bergfeld, "one feels a great
responsibility for other female medical colleagues….and it is necessary for women who have
achieved to bring along younger women ... we need to open the doors for young bright
minds…" A staff physician at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, she is the Head of the Section
of Dermatopathology and Head of the Section for Dermatologic Research.
