for Excellence in Teaching of Dermatopathology
Established by The American Society of Dermatopathology in 1997 in honor of Walter R. Nickel, this award was conceived to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions in the teaching of dermatopathology.

2007 Nickel Award
The 2007 award waspresented to Dr. Bernett L. Johnson Jr., professor of
dermatology and pathology, The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. In addition to
his university positions, Dr. Johnson is medical director of the Hospital of the University of
Pennsylvania, senior associate dean for veterans affairs, and serves on many medical center
committees. Dr. Johnson is known for his exceptional teaching, and he was given the Lindback
Award, his institution's highest teaching award. Bernie is loved and respected by his former
fellows who describe him as the epitome of a teacher, who imparts his knowledge to others in
an engaging, clear, and effective manner. He also challenges the knowledge and skills of his
trainees to make them better dermatopathologists. Bernie teaches the complete practice of
medicine, including laboratory management, and interactions with other physicians. He is
considered by all to be a sterling mentor and a cherished friend.
