Walter R. Nickel Award
for Excellence in Teaching of Dermatopathology

Established by The American Society of Dermatopathology in 1997 in honor of Walter R. Nickel, this award was conceived to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions in the teaching of dermatopathology.

Lyn McDivitt Duncan, MD
Dermatopathologist, Massachusetts General Hospital
Professor of Pathology, Harvard Medical School

Dr. Lyn McDivitt Duncan is a Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School and Dermatopathologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital, where she has been a member of the faculty over thirty years. She has been a member of the ASDP since 1990 and has served on the Continuing Education and Research Committee, Committee on Peer Review, History Committee, Program Directors Committee, Nominating Committee, Appropriate Use Task Force, Strategic Planning Committee, Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and served as Secretary-Treasurer and President.  Dr. Duncan’s published work includes two textbooks: Atlas of Essential Dermatopathology and Atlas of Cutaneous Lymphoma, over 60 textbook chapters, and over 100 publications describing her investigations of melanocytic neoplasia, prognostic factors in early-stage melanoma, analytical platforms for sentinel lymph node diagnosis, and the classification of cutaneous lymphomas. She serves and an editor and co-author WHO Classification of Skin Tumours. Passionate about Dermatopathology education, Dr. Duncan served as the Program Director of the Harvard Dermatopathology Training Program from 1993-2003 and has spearheaded the development of more uniform timeline for fellowship training application in Dermatopathology. For over three decades, Dr. Duncan has served as a mentor for trainees in Dermatology and Pathology, encouraging the inquisitive to answer questions through scholarly research and publication. Most of her publications include a student or trainee as a co-author.  This work has changed the practice of dermatopathology and encourages trainees to carry on scholarly work as their careers develop. On a more personal note, Dr. Duncan is a mother, a swimmer and a mentor. She values her time with family and friends the most, including many close friends in the ASDP community.
