About the Call for Abstracts

The ASDP Call for Abstracts offers three categories of abstract submissions for participants interested in presenting their abstract(s) in an educational session at the Annual Meeting.

  • The General Abstract category is open to all physicians who practice dermatopathology, including medical students, and residents. Abstracts will be selected for either oral or poster presentation.
  • The Duel in Dermatopathology category is an oral abstract competition designed especially for residents in dermatology and pathology. Duel abstracts not selected for the competition will be automatically considered for poster presentation.
  • The Dermatopathology Fellows Abstract category is open to fellows in a dermatopathology training program. Abstracts will be selected for either oral or poster presentation.
There is no limit on the number of abstracts per submitter. All abstracts should be written with the goal of bringing new or updated information to attendees or providing an organized review of older data. The Abstract Review Committee will select all abstract presentations through a blinded review process. Abstract criteria are subject to annual review.

About Abstract Presentations

Abstract submitters must read the CME Activity Policies Manual before submitting their ‎‎abstract.

IMPORTANT! Both oral and poster presenters must disclose to learners verbally and visually, ‎immediately ‎prior to the ‎presentation, all relevant financial ‎relationships or lack thereof (using ‎a slide ‎embedded ‎in their presentation slide deck‎ or a disclosure statement on poster presentation).

Presenters must also ensure ‎that the content of their presentations promotes improvements ‎or quality in ‎healthcare ‎and not a specific proprietary business ‎interest of a commercial ‎interest.‎ Presentations must ‎give a fair and balanced view of ‎therapeutic and diagnostic ‎options based on scientific ‎‎methods generally accepted by the medical community ‎and any ‎clinical content presented ‎must support safe, ‎effective patient care‎.

Abstract Submission Criteria

Abstract submissions must adhere to the published submission criteria:

  • Abstract content must be dermatopathology-related, medically and scientifically valid, and should contain new information not previously reported or novel information about the pathophysiology or diagnosis that enhances the understanding of the disease.
  • Abstracts with authors who are owners or employees of ineligible companies* must meet at least one of the following requirements:
    • The content of the abstract must not be related to the business lines or products of the employer/company.
    • The content of the abstract must be limited to basic science research, such as pre-clinical research and drug discovery, or the methodologies of research, and must not make care recommendations.
    • The content of the abstract must be limited to teaching safe and proper use of medical devices, tests, etc., and must not make recommendations whether or when a device/test is used.
  • Abstract content must not have been previously presented, submitted or accepted for presentation at another meeting or previously published in any journal. Abstract content that has been accepted for publication but has not yet been published may be submitted. If work has been published by the time of presentation, this information must be disclosed at the time of presentation to the audience.
  • The same abstract may not be submitted in more than one category. Submissions in the General, Duel and Fellow abstract categories will be automatically considered for a poster if not accepted as an oral presentation. Submissions to the General abstract category may be made as “poster-only” for those who prefer not to be considered for oral presentation.
  • Abstract titles must be clear and accurately reflect the content of the abstract.
  • Abstracts must adequately summarize the key scientific content of the presentations.
    • The hypothesis should be clearly stated.
    • Scientific methods must be sound and clearly articulated.
    • Appropriate data and observations should be clearly presented.
    • Results must be clearly presented and conclusions must accurately reflect the results and directly address the hypothesis.
  • Institutions and personal or institutional identifiers must not be referenced in the abstract.
  • All financial relationships in the past 24 months must be disclosed at the time of abstract submission and must be mitigated prior to abstract being accepted for presentation. Financial relationships must not introduce bias in the study design.
  • The content must be free of grammatical and spelling errors.
  • Non-scientific abstracts will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Abstract Submission Category Descriptions

General Abstract Category

  • Open to all physicians.
  • Abstracts must be extraordinary case reports, clinical studies or basic science. Each abstract type has been defined below for reference:
    • Case Report - Case reports consider observational description of up to three patients’ diagnoses that may also include discussion of disease management. Case reports usually describe an unusual or novel dermatologic, dermatopathologic or pathologic diagnoses or occurrence of the disease, typically in the context of literature review.
    • Clinical Study - Clinical studies encompass research using human tissues or volunteers that advances medical knowledge relating to pathologic diagnosis, management or treatment of dermatologic or systemic disease with cutaneous presentation. Abstract Evaluation Criteria

    • exceptional teaching value

    • weak to poor writing
    • common or inconsequential material

To adhere to the new Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) Standards (accme.org/standards), abstract presenters' financial relationships will be reviewed and mitigated, prior to abstracts being accepted for presentation.

Abstract Selection Process

If your abstract is not selected for an oral presentation, it will automatically be considered for a poster presentation. The Abstract Review Committee reserves the right to assign oral presentations as appropriate.

Status Notification

All notifications will be sent by email. It is the submitter’s responsibility to ensure his/her email address is correct and current. ASDP is not responsible for confirmations not received due to incorrect contact information. An email confirmation will be sent upon successful submission of an abstract. A separate email indicating abstract status will be sent out in late-September.

If your abstract is accepted for poster presentation, you will be notified of your assigned poster number in late-September/early October.

All oral and poster abstract presenters will be asked to confirm receipt of their notification email and officially accept the invitation to present their abstract. To ensure that you receive notification emails, please add [email protected] to your address book. If you do not receive a notification email, check your spam/junk folder before contacting ASDP. With increased security on institutional email, use of personal email address for notification emails is strongly recommended.
