Federal Appeals Court Upholds Lower-court Ruling Blocking Health Insurance Company Anthem's Proposed Acquisition of Cigna

Andrew W. Gurman, MD, President of the American Medical Association, announced on April 28 that for nearly two years, the AMA fought these anticompetitive mergers. The AMA led a 17-state medical society coalition, communicated with like-minded stakeholders and successfully urged state health insurance departments to refuse to approve the mergers.

The AMA also engaged the National Association of Attorneys General to convince key state AGs to join the Justice Department in blocking the mergers. In addition, the AMA marshaled nationally recognized economists and legal experts to oppose the merger and to file an amicus brief in the court of appeals that complements the brief filed by the AMA.
