Message from the Program Committee Chairs

Earlier this year you received a notice of this year’s meeting once again being held in an online setting. ‎Although we are disappointed that we will not meet in person again this year, the ongoing COVID-19 ‎public health emergency has led the Program Committee and the Board of Directors to make the ‎difficult decision to hold a virtual meeting again in 2021. Although it may feel like we have returned ‎largely to our pre-pandemic routines, many medical institutions continue to enforce travel restrictions ‎and/or limited funding for travel and continuing medical education. And with so many uncertainties ‎remaining about what this fall will bring, the ASDP leadership unanimously agreed that your safety and ‎health are of utmost importance. ‎

The Program Committee, countless volunteers, and staff have been hard at work developing the ‎content for our virtual program. We’ve listened to your feedback from last year’s meeting and have ‎already made some adjustments for 2021.‎ Some of the highlights for this year’s meeting include:‎
  • Five days of education with Optional consultations and seminars beginning Wednesday, October 20 and Plenary sessions offered Thursday through Sunday.
  • Ability to claim up to 41 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM through the plenary program alone (6 ‎more ‎credits than last year).‎
  • More opportunities sprinkled throughout the meeting for oral abstract presenters to share ‎their research. ‎
  • An expanded menu of on-demand plenary presentations, allowing you to breakout from the ‎scheduled meeting program to attend optional live Consultations and Seminars.‎
  • A return of live social events including an online gathering prior to the Evening Slide ‎Symposium and the highly popular Meet the Program Directors session.‎
Stay tuned for additional updates as more details are confirmed. In the meantime, feel free to peruse ‎the preliminary program. Meeting ‎registration will open in a few weeks.‎

58th Virtual Annual Meeting Learning Objectives

The educational mission of the ASDP is to teach, aid in the dissemination of knowledge and encourage research to improve the quality of the practice of dermatopathology. The annual meeting is primarily an educational one, offering members, fellows, residents and medical students lectures on current topics in dermatopathology, interactive sessions at the microscope, a self-assessment course, and opportunities for poster and abstract presentations.

After attending the 2021 Annual Meeting, participants should be able to:‎
  • Recognize histologic features of common, rare and unusual entities in dermatopathology.‎
  • Differentiate clinical and histological features of interesting, complex, difficult, and rare ‎disorders of the skin.‎
  • Demonstrate a methodological approach toward diagnosis of complex, challenging skin ‎biopsies.‎
  • Recognize important features of challenging cases and generate clinically relevant differential ‎diagnosis.‎
  • Recognize the role of advocacy in dermatopathology practice and identify avenues for ‎involvement to maximize impact in policy change.‎
  • Apply practice pearls derived from the experience of expert dermatopathologists to increase ‎diagnostic accuracy and improve patient outcomes.  ‎
  • Differentiate clinical and histological features of disorders of the skin that are more common in ‎patients with skin of color and underserved populations to increase diagnostic accuracy, and ‎improve patient care and outcomes.‎
  • Utilize a pattern-based diagnostic approach in conjunction with immunohistochemistry and ‎molecular genetic testing to improve diagnostic accuracy of cutaneous mesenchymal tumors.‎
  • Implement technologic advancements that emerged as a result of the pandemic to enhance ‎dermatopathology practice and education.‎
  • Recognize the importance of visual recognition in dermatopathology diagnosis
  • Utilize methods that can be applied to daily practice to reduce and prevent errors
  • Demonstrate greater understanding of the pathophysiology of skin manifestations of viral ‎infections.  ‎
